Details

DEET, or DEET, is a widely used insecticide. Spray it on the skin or clothing to avoid insect and mosquito bites.

history
Deet was invented by the U.S. army during World War II. Military use began in 1946 and civilian use began in 1957. Originally used as a pesticide on farms, it was later applied by the U.S. government for use in wartime, especially in Vietnam and Southeast Asia.

Mechanism of action
Deet is volatile and contains human sweat and breath. It works by blocking octene-3-ol, an insect's olfactory receptor. A popular theory is that DEET effectively causes insects to lose their sense of giving off special smells to humans or animals. As initially suspected, DEET did not affect the insects' ability to smell carbon dioxide.
However, recent scientific studies have shown that DEET acts as a true repellent by making mosquitoes uncomfortable. Mosquitoes with antennal receptors of type A olfactory receptor neurons have been identified to respond significantly to deET, in addition to other known mosquito repellents such as cineole, linalool, and ascot.

Chemical properties
Deet is a light yellow liquid at room temperature.
It can be made from diethyl carbamyl chloride and methyl benzoic acid. It can also be made from methyl benzoyl chloride and ethylamine.

A reaction with something
Deet is a powerful solvent that dissolves colored or painted surfaces of plastics, man-made fibers, spandex, synthetic fiber tissues, leather, including nail polish.
